    MALTING > MASHING > FERMENTATION > DISTILLATION > MATURATION

    Step 1: Malting

Water, barley and yeast are brought together.

The first process is known as MALTING.

The finest barley is steeped in water for 2 to 3 days, then spread out for 5-10 days to germinate, to become what is known as malted barley. Almost all distilleries these days find it more efficient and cost effective to employ specialist maltsters to produce their malted barley to their own exacting specifications. Tomatin single Highland malt has a lightly peated flavour.
